Stage 4 of PYP Inquiry Cycle

Going Further

Deepening Inquiry, Coding & Problem Solving

Stage Goal

Extend learning into creation, testing complex hypotheses, programming algorithms, and building digital models.

๐Ÿง  Thinking Routines

What If...?

Test variable changes and observe system behaviors under new parameters.

Protocol Steps

  1. 1.Identify a key variable in a code block or model (e.g., gravity speed, loop count).
  2. 2.Predict: What if we increase this parameter tenfold?
  3. 3.Run the simulation and record outcomes.

Example Prompt

"What if we change the loop delay from 1 second to 0.05 seconds in our game loop?"

Parts, Purposes, Complexities

Deconstruct a complex hardware system or program into functional layers.

Protocol Steps

  1. 1.PARTS: What are all the physical/digital parts?
  2. 2.PURPOSES: What is the purpose of each part?
  3. 3.COMPLEXITIES: How do these parts interact and depend on each other?

Example Prompt

"Deconstruct an autonomous robotic car system."

๐Ÿ“ Graphic Organisers

Algorithm Flowchart

Standard flowchart shapes (Oval: Start/End, Rectangle: Action, Diamond: Decision).

Storyboard Wireframe

Scene-by-scene design frames for animations or game levels.

User Story Map

As a [User Role], I want [Feature] so that [Benefit].

๐Ÿซ Classroom Activities

Year 1-2

ScratchJr Animated Story

Program character sprites to move, change costumes, and send message triggers to change scenes.

Year 3-4

Micro:bit Step Counter

Program an accelerometer sensor on Micro:bit using `on shake` loops and counter variables.

Year 5-6

Scratch Clone Game Project

Build a multi-level arcade game featuring custom broadcast events, lives variables, and high-score saving.
